Get a Map

                           What is it?

The concept definition map is a vocabulary building tool used to build understanding of new words. In other words, it is a framework that is used in the organization process of defining and making connections to new vocabulary. It helps students clarify, assimilate, and build deep and authentic meaning to unknown words. A concept definition map includes the target word in the center of the page, characteristics of the word, and sections for examples of the word. The great part about concept definition maps is they can be modified for even level 1 English learners. Lower level students can use the map by illustrating pictures that represent the word meaning, simple words, or for more advanced, phrases and sentences.

                      Ways to Implement

Inspiration is a software that allows students and teachers to create concept maps on the computer or with a smart board. This is a procedure ESL teachers can use to teach concept mapping to their ESL students. Check out the video below on all the ways you can use it in your class!

                      Why it's Beneficial

Concept mapping is beneficial because it addresses various learning styles and needs. Visual learners would especially benefit from a strategy such as concept mapping where they are allowed to explore visual representation of words that makes sense to each individual. While using technology in your implementation, kinesthetic learners would strive at the opportunity to get up and interact with the Smartboard. In addition to all its opportunities for a variety of student learning styles, it allows for differentiation. Since not everyone will necessary output the same exact product, this allows for student flexibility in the learning (and assessment) process. I also believe concept mapping is beneficial to ESL students because it allows them to work collaboratively. In a group or pair setting, students would have the opportunity to negotiate meaning of new words through conversation. This applies to the Conversation Theory as discussed by Horwitz.

                         WIDA Standards

Concept mapping can be applied to any of the standards, as  most of the best strategies do! Since every standard in WIDA, the language of Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Social and Instructional contain a mass amount of key vocabulary, concept mapping can be utilized. Whether you are teaching a first grader natural resources (ELP Standard: 4) or about different land forms (ELP Standard: 5), concept mapping can be an instructional tool to help develop mastery of new vocabulary.
